A Place for Hope and Healing

A Place for Hope and Healing

by Beth Nelson & Tammie Price

Inside A Place for Us Ministries, located in the heart of Greenwood/Abbeville, SC, a quiet yet powerful movement has taken place over the years—one that has seen many lives transformed.  Lives that have been through some very overwhelming challenges.

A Place for Us Ministries International (APFUMI)

A Mission Rooted in Restoration

Residential Home
Founded in 2001, APFUM began as a maternity home for young women in crisis. Since then, the organization evolved into a multifaceted ministry serving young women aged 13 to 27 dealing with serious life issues — from unplanned pregnancies to addiction, abuse, self-harm, mental health, and more. The mission continued year after year, seeing a progression in various life-controlling issues.  The one common thread needed was healing emotionally; all needed to find hope, healing, and purpose.

Our borders also include: The Alcoves, a mission in Nicaragua, and A Place for Us @ Our Farm.

The Alcoves

This unique marketplace and ministry hub includes many upscale boutiques within a 10,000 sq ft mini mall.  It is a well-known gift shop and a Christian bookstore (His Place), salon (Beautopia), and Gather Bistro & Bakery. A small portion of resources from the Alcoves helps fund various parts of our mission.

Nicaragua Mission

Our Nicaragua mission was established in 2015. It is a training center that serves single moms by offering job skills training. There are plans in January 2026 to integrate elements of the Our Farm model in Nicaragua, to enhance holistic support and sustainable practices for vulnerable families."

Our Farm

In 2023, APFUMI acquired a 59-acre property in Abbeville County, known as Our Farm. This serene retreat serves multiple purposes: hosting Compassion Fatigue retreats, Renew Hope Camps, individual counseling sessions, outreach events, and volunteer opportunities. It’s envisioned as a space for healing, agricultural education, and restoration through nature.

Lives Transformed

A Resident’s Story:

The true essence of A Place for Us lies in the transformed lives. From a residential graduate,

“Since coming here, I’ve grown immensely. I’ve finally managed my anger

and experienced God’s enduring joy and happiness. I’ve learned to trust
Him and let Him guide my life.”

Volunteers and supporters echo this impact:

“Being involved from the start has been profoundly rewarding. Witnessing

countless lives changed is a daily blessing,” says a long-time volunteer.

Whether it’s healing from trauma, learning to grow an organic garden, or simply rediscovering one’s purpose and worth, all leave APFUMI with renewed hope.

Challenges and Financial Needs

Running a ministry of this nature requires ongoing funding. While the organization raised approximately $500,000 in 2024, its expenses slightly exceeded income, making donor support more critical than ever.

Much of its funding comes from individual donations, churches, civic organizations, grants, and a % of retail sales The Alcoves plays a small role in sustaining the ministry; monetary donations, volunteer time, and in-kind gifts are what keep our programs going!
